Prof. Dr. Junko Tahara was born in Yokohama, Japan. She is Professor of Sport History within the Faculty of Physical Education, Kokushikan University, Tokyo, Japan and also Visiting Professor at the Institute of Sport Sciences, Koblenz-Landau University, Koblenz, Germany (2014-2015) and she was Visiting Academic in the School of Human Movement Studies at the University of Queensland, Australia, in 2002. She has been Vice-president of the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee since 2014, board member of the International Fairplay Committee since 2018, board member of Asian Council of Exercise & Sports Science (ACESS) since 2007, and Member of the Science Council of Japan since 2006.

Her fields of research, publication and teaching is Olympism and Pierre de Coubertin, Fair Play and Sport Ethics, History and Politics at the Olympic Games, History and Development of Olympic Education, and History and Policies of Sport and Gender.
​
She participated as player representing Japan in the Women's World Bowls Championships 1996 in England, as well as player and manager in the Women's World Bowls Championships 2004 in England.
